La Guajira has been sub-divided by its territorial configuration in three major regions from northeast to southeast, which are Alta Guajira, Media Guajira and Baja Guajira.
Alta Guajira, is located on the peninsular tip, is semi-deserted, with sparse vegetation where cactus and thistles predominate; and some hills that do not exceed 650 mts above sea level, like Makuira, Jarara and Cerro de la Teta.
